September 12, 1968 Upon request of the Post Office department, the Winters Planning Commission, meeting last night at the City Hall, delayed action on the request for a variance to build a new post office at the northwest corner of First and Russell streets. The Winters School Board, meeting Monday evening, hired Mr. Robert Morris as principal of the Primary School and Wolfskill Kindergarten Center. Father Eugene Lucas has been appointed by Bishop Alden J. Bell as pastor of the Winters-Esparto parish. He assumed his new duties last week. Funeral services were held at the Pioneer Presbyterian Church Saturday morning for Herman E. Mermod, 77, who died in the Davis Community Hospital last Wednesday, September 6, following an illness of about two months. Miss Sina Andersen, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. A. C. Andersen, of Winters, was one of 658 students at California State Polytechnic College in San Luis Obispo named to the President’s Honors List for the 1968-67 academic year. Rich Chiles was named “Rookie of the Year” in the Appalachian League recently as officials and coaches voted the Winters’ athlete this top honor although he played only half a season for Covington’s Astros before moving up to Oklahoma City’s Triple A team in the Pacific Coast League. Tom Reynolds, who is with the U. S. Navy, arrived on Saturday from San Diego to spend a two weeks’ furlough here with his mother, Mrs. Elmina Reynolds. ]]>
