August 14, 1953 Harold Parish of the Parish Brothers contracting firm said this week that work on the first phase of the Monticello Dam will begin within 10 days after the Bureau of Reclamation tells them to proceed. The low bid, submitted by Peter Kiewit for construction of the dam was $7,678,991. Guy F. Adkinson was the next low bidder with $8,417,560.10. Miss Pat Murray, 19year-old Winters telephone operator, will be Yolo county’s entry in the State Fair “Maid of Magic” contest. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Yandell of Long Beach are the parents of a daughter, born July 25, 1953. Airman Second Class Herman Campos, who for the past year has been serving on the air police in Iceland, expects to return to the states in September. Funeral rites were held yesterday afternoon in the Presbyterian Church for William Davis Overhouse, 89, who passed away early Tuesday morning at the Woodland Clinic. The General Services Administration of the federal government has called for bids for a warehouse and laboratory for the Bureau of Reclamation. Mrs. J. Chris Gertz of San Francisco is visiting with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank R. Martinez of the Wolfskill district. Following a three weeks’ trip to Pittsburgh, Pa., where she visited with relatives, Mrs. Daisy Rhodes has resumed her work at Day’s Drug Store.
