September 24, 1953 California’s Governor Earl Warren broke ground yesterday morning for the construction of the Monticello Dam. He was assisted on the bulldozer by State Senator Luther Gibson of Vallejo. Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Johnson of Winters are the parents of a daughter, Darlene Frances, born at the Woodland Clinic Hospital. In one of the most costly fires in the history of Winters, Jeffery’s Mill was almost completely destroyed by fire last night. Mr. and Mrs. Everett Fenley and Elwin Martin left Friday morning for Hat Creek where they planned to stay with Mr. and Mrs. Allen Martin while enjoying a fishing trip. Mrs. Ed Rominger has returned from Los Angeles where she visited with relatives. David Robbins, son of Mrs. Clyde Mitchell has returned to the University of Nevada at Reno, where he is a senior student in mining engineering. Warren Tufts has been named as member of the board of trustees of the Winters Elementary school to succeed Glenn Kidder, who resigned. Miss Louise Bellport, who has been a college student in Santa Barbara, has entered the University of California at Davis. Mrs. J. G. Mayer and Mrs. Cord Hailey attended a meeting of the Powerettes (wives of P. G. and E. employees) held in Woodland Wednesday evening. With about 80 members and guests in attendance, the Parent Teacher Association entertained Friday evening at the annual reception for teachers.]]>
