Winters Middle School’s sixth grade class had an amazing trip to Camp Loma Mar Outdoor School last month. For as long as anyone can remember, WMS sixth graders have been spending a week at an outdoor school. For over twenty-five years, they have been heading down the coast, south of Half Moon Bay, to spend a week in cabins among the redwoods at Exploring New Horizons, Loma Mar.
While there, the students learned about ecology, botany, biology, astronomy, and geology, all while exploring the outdoors. They spent a day in the redwoods, another in the oaklands, and a third at estuaries and tide pools of the Pacific Ocean.
They spent time in an organic garden, went on a night hike, sang at campfires, and made lifelong friendships. For many, it was the first and only camping experience of their lives. They explored Pescadero Creek, hugged Big Red, and climbed Mount Ellen, all the while learning about the plants and animals that live there.
This experience was made possible for these 6th graders in part by many generous donors, and a supportive community who helped students cover their cost buying candy and making donations.]]>
