In a message posted online, the Winters Fire Department said firefighters from CAL FIRE would start the burns on Monday, May 6 and continue for at least two weeks. The burns will take place between Pleasants Valley Road and the Monticello Dam, the fire agency said. Fire officials say smoke may be visible in the area once burning starts and cautioned drivers to be careful if they plan on traveling along Highway 128 during that time. Similar controlled burns were conducted last June just weeks before a large wildfire erupted in the Capay Valley. That fire, known as the County Fire, grew to 90,000 acres over a two-week period before being extinguished near Highway 128. This year’s burns are being coordinated by CAL FIRE, Yolo County’s Office of Emergency Services and the Winters Fire Department. Anyone with questions about the controlled burns is asked to contact the Winters Fire Department at 530-795-4131.
