The Winters Express won two 2017 California Journalism Awards in the annual contest sponsored by the California News Publishers Association (CNPA). The awards ceremony was held on Saturday, April 14, at The Lodge at Sonoma Renaissance Resort & Spa in Sonoma.
The Express won a first place award in the “Coverage of Business News” category, for newspapers of similar size. The story, written by Express editor Debra DeAngelo, covered the opening of the new PG&E Gas Safety Academy in November 2016.
“This piece made me feel like a part of the community and a participant in the excitement of the day,” said a CNPA judge.
DeAngelo’s year-long coverage of the Project Playground effort also won a third place award in the new “Public Service Journalism” category.
A judge commenting on the story said, “Thoroughly documented a community effort to rebuild a needed community touch point.”
The Winters Express is part of the McNaughton Newspapers family.
