The Winters High School JV baseball team started the 2018 season with a victory last Saturday, Feb. 24, when they traveled to Cordova High School to play the Lancers in the season opener. The Warriors played a solid game from start to finish and came with a well earned 7-3 victory.

“We hit the ball well and had great pitching,” said Garcia. “Ryan Stone threw the first five and a third innings and Kaiden Pease closed out the game.”

At the plate, Thomas Guidici went 1 for 3 with a run scored to lead the offensive attack. Jason Drummond scored three runs. Cooper Andres and Hunter Godden both batted 1 for 4. Stone went 1 for 5 with a run scored and three RBI, while Andrew Del Rio and Carson Lowrie each batted 1 for 5 with a run scored and an RBI.

In their second game of the season, the Warriors had a difficult time with Pioneer High School out of Woodland. On Tuesday, Feb. 27, the Warriors hosted the Patriots and lost 14-2. Winters scored both of their runs in the fifth inning when Lowrie and Andres crossed the plate. Lowrie batted 1 for 2, while Andres went 1 for 1.

Despite the loss coach Garcia found a bright spot on the Warriors defensive side with Godden stepping on the mound in relief.

“Hunter did a very good job coming in,” Garcia said. “He didn’t give up any runs and pitched consistent. Overall we are a young team but it’s a great group of kids so it should be a fun season.”
