Born on September 20, 1928 in Lubrin, Spain to Jose and Esperanza Rubio, Maria Rubio Pitts passed this life on Dec. 29, 2017 at her home in Winters with family at her side.
She immigrated with her family from Spain at the age of 5, eventually settling in Winters. She graduated from Winters High School, where she loved playing basketball. She worked in Winters for several businesses, including The California Market and Mariani’s.
Maria married James E Pitts on Oct. 13, 1950. They were married for 51 years. Together, they raised four children in Winters. She volunteered with the local Well Baby Clinic and local schools as her children were growing up.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and brothers John and Joseph Rubio.
She is survived by her sons, Richard (Deborah), Joseph and Michael, and daughter JoAnn Hayes (Rob). She was blessed with four grandchildren, Christopher Hayes (Crystal), Deston Hayes (Judy), Jeffrey Pitts (Lori) and Amber Pitts, and five great-grandchildren: Bailey Hayes, Logan Pitts, Kendall Pitts, Cadence Hayes and Jeter Hayes. They will all miss her terribly, but will cherish many wonderful memories.
Maria was loving, kind and devoted to her family. Family always came first before her other loves: gardening, doll making, painting and watching any sports event.
She was laid to rest on Jan. 8, 2018.
