Winters Out Loud’s monthly Open Mic night invites everyone in the community to share poetry on Thursday, Jan. 11, 7-8:30 p.m. There is no charge to attend or participate. Open Mic night happens at the Berryessa Gap tasting room, 15 Main Street, on the second Tuesday of each month.

“Everyone is invited to read or recite original poetry as well as the poetry of your favorite poets,” says coordinator Deborah Shaw Hickerson.

“Our current U.S. Poet Laureate is Tracy K. Smith, an African America woman, raised near Winters in Fairfield,” says Shaw Hickerson. “Her father worked as an engineer at Travis Air Force Base and her mother was a teacher.

“Smith often addresses current social and political issues in her poetry. But as Poet Laureate, she aims to advocate for poetry itself and to instill the same awe she felt when she read poetry as a girl. She plans to use her position to be a literary evangelist of sorts, by visiting small towns and rural areas to hold poetry events.”

Join Winters Out Loud to express yourself, to get to know local poets, or to just listen. Presenters have five to ten minutes each to share.

“Bring in a favorite collection that’s been gathering dust on your bookshelf — poetry wants to be heard,” says Shaw Hickerson.
