Seeking elders to honor

Support Local Journalism

Throughout history, older adults have achieved much for our families and community. That remains true today, and gives us ample reason this year (2018) to reserve a special day, Elder Day, in honor of all older adults, but especially those that are 90 years of age and older, or will be 90 before Dec. 31, 2018, and who mean so much to us all.

Elder Day, Saturday, June 2, is set aside to give community appreciation to our parents, grandparents and great-grandparents by showing them our sincere affection and gratitude where the entire City of Winters community will celebrate the people being highlighted that day.

The public acknowledgement is for their personal contribution to families, friends and community. In 2017, the Elder Day Council was able to bring together and rejoice a large number of local residents in that age group.

For 2018, we are once again in search of those who are 90 years of age or who will be 90 before Dec. 31, 2018. We will also celebrate last year’s recipients at the event, and anyone else who is new to this growing group of magnificent individuals whose wonderful stories cover the generations.

Because time is critical, the Elder Day Council is currently seeking contact information for our elders before Monday, April 30. As with the 2017 recipients, we want to memorialize them in photographs and share their stories.

If you know of anyone in that age group, please contact the following:

For our Latino community, please contacto: Miembro del concilio de adultos mayores Irene Goya-Tweedt at Teléfono: 530-212-1035, or email

For all others, please contact Wally Pearce, 530-771-7265 or email

Your help with this is greatly appreciated.

Equally important, please mark your calendars and plan on attending this wonderful festivity on Saturday, June 2, from 2-4 p.m. at St. Anthony Parish Hall, located at 511 Main Street. Come and watch history being made in the City of Winters. Everyone is welcome.
