Vocal powerhouse and songwriting talent Shana Morrison draws her inspiration from a broad range of influences including blues, R&B, country, rock, pop and jazz. Backed by her band Caledonia, Morrison will return to The Palms Playhouse on Friday, March 8 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $22 general admission and $18 student admission. The daughter of legendary Northern Irish musician Van Morrison, Shana Morrison began performing with her group Caledonia in the San Francisco Bay Area in 1996. Morrison released a debut CD on her own label, Belfast Violet Records, in 1998. She has since released four more albums, including “7 Wishes” on Vanguard Records and a collaborative album with slide guitarist Roy Rogers. Since 2002, Morrison and Caledonia have toured internationally, including several tour dates with her father between 2006 and 2008. She has shared billing with the likes of Bonnie Raitt, John Lee Hooker and Dr. John, and has played for a variety of festival audiences including the San Francisco Blues Festival and the Cork (Ireland) Jazz Festival. Morrison’s songs are both catchy and lyrically interesting, with her material pinned down by her strong and emotionally varied voice. Her vocal style reflects her omnivorous musical interests, and she adapts her full-throated approach to match the needs of each song. While the bulk of Morrison’s performances showcase her own diverse songwriting, she is also likely to throw in a few choice covers by such greats as John Lee Hooker, Bill Withers or papa Van Morrison. Her vocal style led to Common Ground’s assessment that, “With a thoroughbred voice, Shana Morrison can wail with the best of them.” Tickets are available online via The Palms’ website and through Eventbrite, as well as at Pacific Ace Hardware in Winters, Armadillo Music in Davis, Davids’ Broken Note in Woodland and at the door if the show is not sold out.
