It’s time again for the Poetry Jam/Slam hosted by Winters PTA, Winters High School and Winters Community Library, featuring K-12 student recitations.

The Poetry Jam is an informal performance where students, either individually or in teams, recite an original poem they have composed or choose a favorite poem to present to the audience.

Through the recitations, students have the opportunity to express themselves and deepen their understanding and appreciation of poetry.

This year, the event takes place at Young Gymnasium on the Winters High School campus with DJ Troy Barnett as the emcee.

Plan to attend one or both sessions of the Jam/Slam on Feb. 21.

K-5 grades will perform at 6 p.m.; the Winters High School culinary class will provide refreshments at 7 p.m., and 6-12th graders will perform a slam at 7:15

Following their recitations, refreshments prepared by Chris Novello’s culinary students are served, and then at 7:15 p.m., students in sixth through twelfth grades compete in the Slam for monetary prizes and gift cards from local businesses.

The sponsors are Steady Eddy’s, The Scoop, First Northern Bank, Winters Friends of the Library, Winters Unified School District and the Winters PTA. First Northern Bank donated the cash prizes and Steady Eddy’s and The Scoop donated gift cards.

At 5:30 p.m., Winters PTA will be selling Buckhorn tri-tip sandwiches, so bring the family and have dinner before the Jam begins.

The event is free and will be a fun evening for all participants and attendees.

Questions can be directed to Olivia Rodriguez at Winters High School, 795-6140 or orodriguez@wintersjusd.org.
