Join the Yolo County Library’s annual Summer Reading Program from May 20 through Aug. 18. Each of the eight library branches will celebrate this year’s theme, Reading Takes You Everywhere, by hosting programs and activities related to the theme throughout the summer and providing reading incentives for children, teens, and adults.

Everyone who signs up for the Summer Reading Program in person at their local library branch or online will receive a free book. This year, participants can choose their own challenge, reading either 10 books, 10 hours or 10 days throughout the summer.

All participants who complete their summer reading challenge will receive a prize, a ticket for additional prize drawings, and a coupon for a free meal at Chipotle. Children ages 0-12 will also receive a free pizza coupon to Round Table Pizza. Participants can earn more tickets by doing additional reading or completing further activities.

This year’s theme, Reading Takes You Everywhere, is inspired by the excitement of exploration and new discoveries to be found in books, libraries, our communities, and beyond. Participants of all ages can expect a wide variety of free activities that encourage them to explore, learn, and discover, including programs from local attractions such as the Sacramento Children’s Museum and Explorit Science Center. Wildlife shows and regional performers, such as magicians and musicians, will also be offered.

“The Summer Reading Program supports student success by reducing the achievement gap,” said Early Learning Coordinator Laura Benn. “Parents of children enrolled in public library summer reading programs reported that their children spent more time reading over the summer, read more books, were well prepared for school in the fall, and read more confidently. The Yolo County Library is committed to supporting lifelong learning and educational enrichment for all families.”

In summer of 2017, over 788,000 Californians signed up for a public library summer reading program and more than 1.65 million Californians attended summer reading events and activities. The Yolo County Library joins libraries across the nation and state of California to encourage adults, youth and families to read over the summer. The Summer Reading Program is a project of the California Library Association and part of California’s statewide summer reading outcomes.

The Summer Reading Program is free and sponsored by the various Friends of the Library groups and local donors.  For more information or to sign up, visit your local Yolo County Library branch or
