Warrior varsity basketball wins two straight

It was a great week for the Winters High School varsity boys basketball team as they won both of the games they played. Winters started with a league contest at home against Willows on Tuesday, Jan. 16, and then beat visiting East Nicolaus on Thursday, Jan. 18.

In game one of the week the Warriors led from start to finish beating the Honkers 66-53 for a league victory.

Winters led 38-25 and controlled the second half as well. Daniel Carrion led all scorers with 20 points, had five rebounds, a block and three steals. Alec Matheson scored 10 points, had seven rebounds and three blocks. Tyler Berry scored 10 points. Kyle Thomas scored 8 points, had seven rebounds and a block. Ruben Valencia scored 7 points, had two rebounds, five assists and four steals. Sammy Gonzales scored  6 points, had eight rebounds, two assists and six steals. Jordan Cobaugh scored 4 points, Ehsan Fasel scored 1 point, while Thomas Kakutani had three assists, two steals and a block.

In a non-league game, the Warriors hosted East Nicolaus and after leading 21-14 at the half were just able to hold on to a 37-35 victory. Both teams put 10 points on the board in the third period to make it 31-24 but the Spartans outscored the Warriors 11-6 in the fourth in their attempted comeback. No individual stats were available.
