It’s time again for the Poetry Jam/Slam hosted by Winters PTA, Winters High School, Winters Friends of the Library, Winters Unified School District, Winters Elementary, Winters Middle School and Winters Community Library, featuring TK-12 student recitations. The Poetry Jam is an informal performance where students, either individually or in teams, recite an original poem they have composed or choose a favorite poem to present to the audience. Through the recitations, students have the opportunity to express themselves and deepen their understanding and appreciation of poetry.

This year, the event takes place at the Young Gymnasium on the Winters High School campus. Plan to attend one or both sessions of the Jam/Slam on Thursday, Feb. 28. Beginning at 6 p.m., students in transitional kindergarten through fifth grade recite. Following their recitations, refreshments prepared by Chris Novello’s culinary students are served, and then at 7:15 p.m., students in sixth through 12th grades compete in the Slam for monetary prizes and gift cards from local businesses. Special thanks to our Sponsor First Northern Bank for the cash prizes and to our sponsors Steady Eddy’s and The Scoop for the gift cards. All students can sign up with their teachers and are encouraged to participate. The Slam judges are Sally Hirst, Winters Community Librarian and Jesse Loren, City Council Member.

At 5:30 p.m., Winters PTA will be selling Buckhorn tri-tip sandwiches, so bring the family and have dinner before the Jam begins.

The event is free and fun! Questions can be directed to Olivia Rodriguez at Winters High School 530-795-6140 or through email to
