WPNS celebrates youth with art

Children from Winters State Preschool Center are pictured doing process art in preparation for the Week of the Young Child, April 16-20. Their art will be displayed in the storefront of El Pueblo Meat Market. Process art focuses on the children’s experience in making the art instead of the finished product. Artwork created by Winters Parent Nursery School (WPNS) students will be on display at The Scoop and Pizza Factory April 15-22 in celebration of Week of the Young Child.

As a play-based social structure program, WPNS considers art time important in its students’ development.

“It provides a creative exploration of art,” said WPNS Director/Teacher Karen Benson-Neil.

“Allowing young children the freedom to create art in an unguided setting engages all of their senses and allows them to manipulate, explore and experiment with the different materials at hand.”

All forms of art allow early learners an opportunity to develop upon their fine motor and decision-making skills.

Parents and staff working in the WPNS classroom observe and engage students in conversation about their art as they make it to build upon their language development and social skills to help them prepare for kindergarten and future social situations.
