April 15, 1954 George Duke, manager of the Country Club restaurant, nosed out Councilman Phil Latona by six votes Tuesday to win a seat on the city council. Directors of Solano County Irrigation District voted last week to exclude 6,769.45 acres, disqualifying those lands from receiving Monticello water. The Winters Merchants baseball team will open its season here Sunday, meeting the Signal Depot nine on the high school diamond at 2:15. Last Sunday Winters trounced North Sacramento 23 to 8. Claude Gilbert led the hitting attack for the locals with five hits in five trips to the plate, in a game played in North Sacramento. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Timmons plan to leave this weekend for Montreal, Canada, where they will visit friends and relatives. Lt. Lloyd Islip arrived home Saturday from Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, where he completed his enlistment with the Marines. Meredith Bruhn served as a temporary city police officer this week, substituting for Wm. L. Barnes, who was called to Fresno by the serious illness of his wife. Mr. and Mrs. George Duke of Winters, are the parents of a daughter, Debra Kay, born at the Woodland Clinic Hospital April 13, 1954. Young Timmy Ireland was feted yesterday on the occasion of his fourth birthday anniversary when a group of young friends gathered at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wayne S. Ireland. Mr. Dudley Sparks, son of Mr. and Mrs. D. M. Sparks, left Tuesday morning for Panama City, Panama, where he will be assistant traffic manager for Pan American Grace Airways. ]]>
