according to figures released by the FBI. Scams similar to ones popping up in Yolo County have been reported in Pennsylvania, Illinois and Washington state. “These unique types of scams have increased in recent months,” Yolo County District Attorney Jeff Reisig said in a statement. “The best defense against becoming a victim of such a scam is to be educated and aware.” The DA’s office said people can avoid falling victim to rental scams by refusing to give out personal information online, declining to send or “wire” money to individuals they encounter online, turning down offers to invest in property sight unseen and making sure personal information on social media accounts is made private. The DA’s office said suspected scammers can be reported by calling the Real Estate Fraud Office at 530-666-8471.]]>
