On Sunday, July 8, the Latino Center of Art and Culture in Sacramento hosted the fifth annual Fiesta de Frida, an event celebrating all things Frida Kahlo. The event coincides with the 111th anniversary of the artist’s birthday, July 6. The event hosted a craft fair, art activities and a gallery of local mural artists. The fiesta culminated in a Frida Kahlo look-alike competition, featuring dozens of Frida’s young and old. Local city councilperson Jesse Loren was invited to judge the contestants as a member of a four person panel. Along with many of the contestants, Loren adopted elements of dress that the iconic artist became known for, including traditional Mexican clothing and floral headdresses. After choosing the top five Frida lookalikes, Loren and the other judges were called on stage to determine the top three finalists, based on audience applause.    ]]>
