Gianna Carrion, a senior at Winters High School, is the Pisani’s Athlete of the Week. Carrion has played volleyball, basketball and softball during her high school career. This season she is a starting middle for the WHS varsity volleyball team. Head coach Lucy MacMahon said Carrion is a strong hitter and has done an amazing job with blocks and spikes at the net. “Gianna is force. She has powerful jump serve and some killer hits,” said MacMahon.
Winters once boasted a prosperous Japanese community, which tragically burned on Aug. 1, 1942 when the United States was celebrating victory over Japan. While the cause of the fire has never been determined, Winters saw discrimination toward Japanese Americans following the war.
