Gio Jimenez, a Winters High School freshman, is the Pisani’s Athlete of the Week. Jimenez is an athlete on the junior varsity football team. He has been a key player on the offensive team using his speed and strength to lead the Warriors in touchdowns. Jimenez is also a starting defensive linebacker. “Gio has been a critical piece to our success on defense as our middle linebacker,” said assistant coach Rudy Baylor. Jimenez keeps his eye on the ball and hits hard, he is one of the reasons the Warriors defense has been so successful, giving up less than 40 points in a total of five games. He is definitely going to be a player to watch as the season progresses.
Winters once boasted a prosperous Japanese community, which tragically burned on Aug. 1, 1942 when the United States was celebrating victory over Japan. While the cause of the fire has never been determined, Winters saw discrimination toward Japanese Americans following the war.
