Isabella Mehl, a junior on the Winters High School varsity soccer team, is the Pisani’s Athlete of the Week. As center defender, Mehl did an exceptional job at controlling the game from the back line. “The center defenders are the unsung heroes always. The stats never reflect how hard she really works,” said head coach Kim Olivas. Mehl was extremely consistent in reading the plays and playing with controlled aggression, she was never seen waiting on a ball. “Her strength on defense is why there have only been 21 goals scored on us in 19 games. She is also an amazing team leader who cracks us up daily,” said Olivas.
Winters once boasted a prosperous Japanese community, which tragically burned on Aug. 1, 1942 when the United States was celebrating victory over Japan. While the cause of the fire has never been determined, Winters saw discrimination toward Japanese Americans following the war.
