Memo Valadez, a Winters High School senior on the varsity football team, is the Pisani’s Athlete of the Week. Valadez finished the year with 67 catches, a new school record, and 1,152 Receiving yards for another school record (by almost 300 yards). “Memo was the heart and soul of our team. He was a very passionate player and loves the game of football,” said head coach Daniel Ward. “I think I have had more fun coaching Memo the last two years than any player before him. He always has a smile on his face and it is contagious to everyone else around him. Football wise he was the ultimate playmaker and was special with the ball in his hands. He was definitely our go to guy when we needed a big play and he never let us down and never had a bad game.”
Winters once boasted a prosperous Japanese community, which tragically burned on Aug. 1, 1942 when the United States was celebrating victory over Japan. While the cause of the fire has never been determined, Winters saw discrimination toward Japanese Americans following the war.
