Kirissa Padilla, a resident of Winters, has won the Soroptimist “Live Your Dream Award” of $1,000 sponsored by Winters Soroptimist. Padilla’s application from the Winters award was submitted to the Sierra/Nevada Region where she was awarded an additional $3,000. The award was recently presented to her in Reno, Nevada at a special ceremony.   The awards are unique as the money is not tied to tuition.  Instead she is allowed to use the money for other costs that are related to her ongoing education. In Padilla’s case she will be using it for transportation to her classes at UC Davis. She will also use the funds to offset her expenses while completing her internship. Padilla’s goal is to become a Registered Dietitian and Board Certified Lactation Consultant. Padilla attends UC Davis and is working toward a Bachelor’s Degree in Clinical Nutrition. She has been a breastfeeding peer counselor for 11 years with a goal of specializing in infant and child nutrition. She has worked with chronically ill, critically injured and those with special needs. She also has her sights set on becoming a doctor. Padilla works full time, attends school full time while maintaining excellent grades, and provides for her family. Padilla is described as incredibly intelligent, a dedicated student, and a loving mother to her two sons. She is encouraged by her husband who Padilla sponsored for his green card. She is dedicated to achieving her dreams through her education. The “Live Your Dream Award” could not have gone to a more deserving young woman! To support the “Live Your Dream” award as well as other scholarships to the high school, Wolfskill, and Munchkin for girls and women join the Soroptimists on Thursday, June 6 from 5-9:30 p.m. at the Buckhorn (530-795-4503).  Make reservations and say that you support Soroptimist. The Buckhorn will donate 15 percent of the evening’s profits to these Soroptimist awards.  ]]>
