Trustees heard a proposal to approve an early release schedule for Winters Middle School, which would coordinate with the early release schedule of both Winters elementary schools at the Winters Joint Unified School District Board of Trustees meeting on Oct. 14.

WMS Principal Dawn Delorefice said the early dismissal schedule would be in alignment with the Friday dates already approved for Waggoner Elementary and Shirley Rominger Intermediate schools’ early release dates.

Delorefice said that the 2021–2022 school year would serve as a Pilot Year to review the effectiveness of the early release model, and that Winters JUSD would revisit implementation and progress of its impact in January 2022.

The rationale is aligned with the WMS Single Focus for Instruction Plan for implementing Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) as described in the the book “Learning by Doing” by Rebecca and Robert DuFour.

Delorefice explained that PLCs are “an ongoing process in which educators work collaboratively in recurring cycles of collective inquiry and action research to achieve better results for the students they serve.” She noted that PLCs operate “under the assumption that the key to improved learning for students is continuous job-embedded learning for educators.”

On early release Fridays, educators have the opportunity and time to work through the PLC process of collective inquiry and reflection of student data and staff collaboration to improve instruction, support, assessments, interventions and outcomes for students.

The WMS Single Focus for Instruction presentation was originally presented and approved by Trustees in March of 2020.

Trustees are expected to vote on the proposal at the Thursday, Oct. 21 school board meeting.

New schedule
If approved, the early release schedule would launch for WMS students on Friday, Oct. 29. It would then coincide with the Waggoner and SRIS early release schedule of:

  • Nov. 19
  • Dec. 3, 17
  • Jan. 14
  • Feb. 4, 18
  • March 4, 18
  • April 15, 29
  • May 13, 27
  • June 2

Delorefice said the early release Friday minimum day bell schedule would be the same as the Wednesday minimum day bell schedule of 8:05 a.m. to 1:20 p.m.

Families would receive communication notices of the dates through the Parent Square app in the Friday Updates weekly, as well as other individual reminders from the school.
