In honor of Mother’s Day, I asked my mama what one of her favorite dishes in Winters was.
Mama said, “Since I can’t choose grandma’s biscuits, I’ll go with David’s walnut shrimp at Ocean.”
Since mama knows best, the walnut shrimp at Oceans Restaurant is this week’s Flavor Faaave.
Usually my go-to at Ocean is the spicy, garlic chicken with chow mein and egg rolls. However, I always find myself reaching over and picking more than my fair share of my mom’s order of walnut shrimp when we’re eating together. I’m not sure what chef David is putting in this stuff, but this shrimp is so darn tasty it’d make Bubba from Forrest Gump jealous.
The shrimp themselves are plump, juicy and bend plastic forks with their heft. They’re crispy on the outside, yet also coated in a sweet glaze that reflects the twinkle in your eye and gives them a delightful, crunchy-soft consistency. That first bite — oh lordy, that first bite — is so delicious and magical you can almost hear “Feels Like the First Time” by Foreigner playing the back of your head.
Subsequent bites are just as good too, however, these bad boys are pretty sweet to the taste, so pace yourself and let your tastebuds enjoy the ride. Before you know it, you’ve scarfed the deliciousness and are cracking open a fortune cookie that tells you ‘Reading the Winters Express is a key to happiness.’ Well that’s a stretch, but you never know.
At the end of the day, there’s no bad item on the Ocean menu, but if you want to try something new, tasty and tantalizing, give the walnut shrimp a try — because my mama said so.
