Express Rainfall Contest Winner The total amount of local rainfall for the 2020 season was 7.99 inches (compared to 13.37 inches from the previous season.) The winner is Steve Twomey of Winters with a guess of 14.87 inches. Twomey will receive a $100 gift card to the Buckhorn Steakhouse. Joseph Borchard of Davis was the runner up with a guess of 15.73 inches. The new rainfall contest is underway. Look for details on where to send your guesses in the July 28 edition of the Express.

Golden Bear Fire Safety Committee In her Friday update, City Manager Kathleen Salguero Trepa announced the Golden Bear Fire Safety Committee is meeting on Wednesday, July 21 at 6 p.m. at the Winters Fire Station to discuss fire prevention, risk mitigation, and other strategies to prepare for wildfire season. She said the Golden Bear Estates Landowners Association encourages neighboring residents to join the conversation as they collectively work to mitigate fire risk in the area.

Council Goal Setting Workshop A two morning, in-person City Council goal setting workshop is scheduled for Friday, July 23 and Saturday, July 24 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Public Safety Facility community room. Trepa noted the agendas will be posted soon. The Friday morning workshop agenda includes presentations from City staff on the major functional areas of Police, Fire, Public Works, Community Development and General Government). There will also be initial discussion of potential priorities and projects consistent with the Five Focus Areas of Fiscal Stability, Community Engagement & Transparency, Economic Development, Organizational/Operational Excellence, and Community Development/Placemaking. The Saturday morning workshop agenda includes additional project discussion and final priority setting.

Winters JUSD preparation On Tuesday, Winters Joint Unified School District announced staff is preparing preparing for the 2021-2022 school year, and are prioritizing a return to full-day in-person instruction. Winters JUSD will also offer an Independent Study option for families who have determined the student’s health could be put at risk by attending the regular in-person program. The school district released a letter detailing the learning options. Letters can be viewed in English at https://bit.ly/3BjfPIR or in Spanish at https://bit.ly/3eCzt90.
