The new curbside green waste recycling program began this week, and everyone in town should now have their new green waste bins. Recycling pickup will still be every other week, as was the case before, and the green waste pickup will happen on the opposite weeks, every other week. In other words, in addition to garbage pickup, either recycling or green waste will be picked up each week from now on.
There has been some confusion about what is accepted in the green waste bins. According to the city’s Environmental Services Director, Carol Scianna, all kitchen waste is acceptable in these bins, including vegetable, animal and other food waste. Paper is not accepted in the bins.
Everyone in town should have received a new pickup schedule packet and handy refrigerator magnet showing which weeks are recycling weeks and which are green waste pickup weeks. Regular garbage will be picked up each week.
Yard waste will still be picked up once per month from February through October, and then weekly from November through January.
Anyone who has not received their pickup schedule packet and magnet, or who has not received their green waste bin, can contact Scianna directly: carol.scianna@cityofwinters.org.
For those who will be using the new food waste collection bins, you can use compostable bags (not biodegradable) but please be aware that they have a shelf life of only about 9 months and then they begin to degrade in the box, so don’t stock up on more than you will use in that time.
Thanks for the extra info Debbie!
