The Sacramento Area Regional Theatre Alliance (SARTA) recently announced nominations for the annual Elly Awards. The Winters Theatre Company (WTC) received four nominations. “SEVEN,” performed by WTC last October in observance of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, received three nominations all for supporting female performances in a drama.
Carla Fleming who played Hafsat Abiola from Nigeria, Fran Wittman, who played the role of Marina Pisklakova-Parker from Russia, and Shahzana Ali, who played the role of Mukhtar Mai from Pakistan, all received nominations for their performances.
“SEVEN” was directed by Anita Ahuja. A special benefit performance of the show took place at the Woodland Opera House earlier this year in April in honor of National Crime Victims’ Rights Week. Proceeds were donated to Empower Yolo and My Sister’s House.
WTC’s 2016 holiday production, “A Christmas Carol,” received an Elly nomination for costume design, a huge undertaking which was coordinated by Heather Collins. The show featured dozens of Dicken’s era costumes for children and adults. The show was directed by Jesse Akers.
The annual Elly Awards honor outstanding achievements of community theaters and artists in the Sacramento area. Elly Awards are named for the late Eleanor McClatchy, who was a devoted patron of the local arts.
