Ethan Demment, a senior offensive and defensive lineman for the Winters High School varsity football team, is the Pisani’s Athlete of the Week. Demment stood out in the scrimmage that kicked off the season. “It’s not very often where you watch a football game and say that a lineman is the best player on the field but that was definitely the case during the scrimmage. Defensively, he was unblockable and was one of the main reasons our defense looked so good” said head coach Daniel Ward. In addition to accomplishments on the field Demment takes on a leadership role for his team. “When your best player is also your best leader and hardest worker it makes for a special player,” said Ward.
Winters once boasted a prosperous Japanese community, which tragically burned on Aug. 1, 1942 when the United States was celebrating victory over Japan. While the cause of the fire has never been determined, Winters saw discrimination toward Japanese Americans following the war.
