Makena Driver, a senior at Winters High School, is the Pisani’s Athlete of the Week. Driver plays on the varsity volleyball team and head coach Mari Chavez said she is always ready to deliver. “Mak has been a captain for the last two games. She has been consistent all around,” Chavez said. “She brings her strong energy, works hard and communicates with her teammates all the time.”
Winters once boasted a prosperous Japanese community, which tragically burned on Aug. 1, 1942 when the United States was celebrating victory over Japan. While the cause of the fire has never been determined, Winters saw discrimination toward Japanese Americans following the war.
