The boys Junior Varsity basketball team played in three games this week. The first was against East Nicolaus where the Warriors went away and played in a non-conference game. On Thursday, Dec. 13 the Warriors hosted Esparto in a non-conference game. On Friday, Dec. 14 they hosted another home non-conference game against Rio Vista High School. In the East Nicolaus game, the Warriors went on the defense. Yahir Sanchez and Diego Valencia of the Warriors controlled the Trojans rebounds, and with swift movement down court they were able to capitalize them. The scoring was led by Yahir Sanchez with 15 points, followed by Diego Valencia with 10 points, Kadin Pease with 10 and Carson Lowrie and Matt Moore both had six points rounded out the final score of 47-36 in a win. “Yahir and Diego both had a great game. They put on a rebounding clinic. They converted offensive rebounds into easy points and kept the other team from getting second chances by dominating on the defensive glass,” said Coach Jon Davis. On Thursday the Warriors hosted Esparto High School in a non-conference game. In the first quarter the Esparto team had a problem hanging on to the ball when passing. A number of bad passes resulted in turnovers that caused a deficit in the score that the Warriors were able to capitalize on. The Warriors not only controlled the ball offensively, but also kept the pressure high throughout the game. David Reyes scored 17 points and Pease scored 13. The final score in the game was 54-19, and was a win. Coach Davis stated, “Our energy on defense was great. We made (many of) our open 3 pointers.” For the last game of the week the Warriors hosted Rio Vista High School in a non-conference game. Reyes not only lead the team in score with 24 points, he also led the defense. Lowrie and Valencia followed the lead set by Reyes on defense. Scoring, on the other hand, was a different story. Lowrie had five points and Valencia closed out the score with two. “Obviously David had a huge game,” Coach Davis said. “He hit six three-pointers, made all his free-throws and played great defense.” “However, it was a true team effort. Carson Lowrie and Diego Valencia were outstanding. We don’t win without guys like that battling in the paint every single possession,” Coach Davis continued to say. “Their effort, strong defense and rebounding has been the backbone of our defense all season. They play with a high IQ on both sides of the ball. Scoring is great, but as a coach you have to recognize that we got those shots because of great rebounding and setting great screens on and off the ball. It was a good win.” The Junior Varsity boys basketball team will be on a break until after the first of the year. The next game will be on Saturday, Jan. 5, against Woodland High School, for the “Find-A-Cure” Night Basket ball game.]]>
