On Wednesday, Nov. 3, the Winters High School cross country squad laced up against 95 other runners in the MLV championship meet at the Colusa-Sacramento River State Recreation Area. Although undermanned most of the season, WHS was able to field a full team for the men’s varsity.
“We had eight seasonal best times and seven personal record times,” head coach William Davis said lauding his team’s performance at the championship meet. “Many runners ran at a whole new level, knocking several minutes off their race times in the past two months.”
The vast improvements made by Christian Hernandez and Yarethzy Sanchez earned both of them all-league honors. Hernandez clocked in his three-mile time at 18:46, with Sanchez finishing sixth in women’s varsity finishing her three-mile race in 22:41 – dropping an entire minute from her previous best.
Wesley Cocker and Diego Rodriguez also vastly improved their three mile times with Cocker at a 19:49 and Rodriguez at 20:46.
Joanna Cuevas of the women’s varsity squad dropped her three-mile time by over three minutes clocking in at 25:46.
Meanwhile for the junior varsity men, Isaac Rodriguez dropped four minutes from his personal best by finishing with at 15:00. Ruby Campos proved her mettle with a time of 17:10 and a medal-winning fourth place in the junior varsity women’s two-mile race.
Freshman Celeste Reyes also shaved an impressive seven minutes from her two mile time from the beginning of the season with a 19:10.
