The Winters High School swim team’s combined team scores took the top spot again at the Butte View League meet hosted by the Warriors on Oct. 6. This week they competed against swimmers from Gridley, Durham, Sutter Union, Willows, Las Plumas, Paradise, Oroville and Wheatland high schools.
Warriors earned points by taking top spots in multiple events across the board. Many athletes also made qualifying times for the Division Section meet scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 27.
The women’s team placed first and118 point followed by Durham with 106 point and Sutter Union with 90 points. The men’s team had a two-point difference behind Gridley, taking second place with 87 points. Both teams beat out Willows who took third place with 61 points.
Amelia Doran and Ava Skinner took first and second place in the women’s 200 individual medley race. Doran placed first with a finals time of 2:27.29 and Skinner in second at 3:11.38.
Diego Valencia and Trevor Grinbergs also dominated in the men’s 50-yard freestyle race. Valencia placed first with a finals time of 24.09 and Grinbergs only seconds behind at 24.70. Valencia also took first in the men’s 100-yard butterfly race, shaving a little over a minute off of his seed time at 1:02.82.
Warriors took the top three spots in the women’s 100-yard breaststroke race. Doran placed first with a finals time of 1:12.40. Mickayla Passantino came in second with a finals time of 1:17.12, followed by Mahalia Lanfranco in third place at 1:30.20.
Passantino and Mikaila Anello placed in the top three spots in the women’s 100-yard backstroke race. Passantino placed first with a finals time of 1:03.94 and Anello placed third at 1:16.88. Both athletes beat their seed times by over a minute.
The men’s 200-yard freestyle relay team finished in first place. Swimmers John Rominger, Kenneth Matheson, Grinbergs and Valencia earned 18 points with a finals time of 1:43.85 (improving from their seed time of 1:46.00).
The women’s 400-yard freestyle relay team placed first in their race. Swimmers Kalyssa Grinbergs, Anello, Doran, and Passantino earned 18 points with a finals time of 4:17.72 (improving from their seed time of 4:20.25).
