Water Warriors Shine at League Championship Meet

Competing against 11 other schools in the Butte View League Championship Meet on Wednesday, Oct. 17, the Winters High School swim team made quite the impression on their league foes and stood tall in the end. The Water Warriors played host to the league championships at Bobbie Greenwood Pool and placed fourth overall with 131 points. Individually the boys team took second place with 99 points to Paradise’s 112, while the girls finished seventh with 32 points. The meet started with the girls 200 medley relay with the Warriors placing sixth place. Marin Spalding, Mia Tretjakov, Taylor Davis and Cara Baker clocked a 2:33.08. The boys team of Sam Petersen, Ryosuke Fugimori, Diego Valencia and Ruben Valencia clocked a 2:03.32 for a second place finish. Darian Lopez took third place in the boys 200 free with a time of 2:12.40 and Eithyn Mello placed fifth in 2:29.29. Garrett Matheson placed third in the boys 200 IM with a time of 2:40.26. In the girls 50 free Baker took fifth place in 30.39. Ruben Valencia took gold in the boys 50 free with a winning time of 23.79 and Fugimori clocked a 32.96. In the girls 100 fly Davis took the silver clocking a 1:09.73 for a second place finish. In the boys 100 fly Diego Valencia took third place with a time of 1:03.45 followed by Petersen in fourth at 1:06.16. Tretjakov clocked a 1:34.05 in the girls 100 free, while in the boys 100 free Ruben Valencia won his second gold with a winning time of 53.15. Lopez placed fourth in the event with a time of 58.10, Matheson was sixth in 58.49 and Montgomery MacMahon clocked a 1:06.60. Baker placed fifth in the girls 500 free with a time of 6:54.78 and Spalding placed 11th at 7:27.29. The girls 200 free relay team of Davis, Baker, Tretjakov and Spalding took eighth place with a time of 2:32.04, while the boys team won gold. Petersen, Matheson and the Valencia brothers Diego and Ruben clocked a winning time of 1:38.04. Winters also had Lopez, Mello, Fugimori and MacMahon team up for a ninth place finish in 2:01.96. Davis competed in the girls 100 backstroke and took fourth place with a time of 1:18.03, while Spalding clocked a 1:27.32. Diego Valencia placed fourth in the boys 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:15.69, Petersen placed ninth at 1:21.28, Mello clocked a 1:26.17, MacMahon had a time of 1:27.44 and Fugimori clocked a 1:35.63. The meet finished up with the boys 400 free relay where the boys team added 12 more points to their score. Matheson, Lopez, MacMahon and Mello clocked a 4:23.59 for a third place finish. ]]>
