Janet Louise Kimes (nee Poore) was born in Skiatook, Okla. on April 30, 1941. She was the first child of Glen and Maxine (Ruth) Poore, and as her father was in the US Navy, the family moved around quite a bit during her childhood. After spending time in the Bay Area, Seattle and Florida — among other places — the family settled in National City, a suburb of San Diego.
Janet met her future husband Mike Kimes in 1953, and they became childhood sweethearts who have been together ever since.
Janet graduated from Sweetwater High School in 1959, and she and Mike were married later that year.
Janet and Mike lived in Lakeside, Calif. for a time, where they began their family — their daughter Vonda was born in 1960 and their son Matthew was born in 1963.
In 1968, the family relocated to Northern California, living first in Winters, then Esparto, and later back to Winters. Janet worked for a time at Greenwood’s Department Store and after that, Janet and Mike owned and ran the ACE Hardware store in Winters for 28 years, where they made many long-lasting friendships throughout the area. Janet became an expert in all aspects of running a hardware store: mixing paint, cutting keys, making the pickup run to Sacramento, and learning and selling all types of hardware and building materials.
Janet was active in Soroptimist International, Beta Alpha Beta, and the Altar Society. She was a very generous and dedicated member of her community, giving freely of her time and talents.
Janet was a gourmet cook and baker, who enjoyed entertaining family and friends whenever possible. She also loved gardening, watching her children and grandchildren’s sporting and horseback riding events, and listening to all types of music.
Janet and Mike enjoyed traveling the world, spending several months a year at their home in Green Valley, Ariz. and spending time with their growing family and many friends.
Janet is survived by her husband of 62 years Mike Kimes, daughter Vonda Fernandes and son-in-law Les Fernandes, son Matt Kimes, and her four granddaughters Jenell Blickle and husband Matt, Janet Wehr and husband Jared, Sarah Perry and her husband Nate, and Hannah Kimes. Janet is also survived by her four great grandchildren: Jens Blickle, Ruth Blickle, Maggie Wehr, and Adalee Wehr, and by her brother Don Poore and sister Debbie Weiner.
She will be remembered by her family and friends as a kind and loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother, aunt, and great grandmother, and someone who would always make time for those in need. She was a beautiful person, inside and out, with a smile that would light up the room. Janet will never be forgotten by those who were fortunate enough to know her.
Service will be at Winters Cemetery July 8 at 10:30. Celebration of life to follow at Saint Anthony Parish Hall.
