Paul Holmes died at home after a brief illness. He was born in Maywood, Ill., a city boy who loved visiting his farming relatives. After graduating from Arizona State with a degree in Anthropology in 1974, he served in the Peace Corps in Sierra Leone for three years.

He returned to attend UC Davis in 1978 and received a Master’s Degree in International Agriculture. Paul started his Yolo County farming career while in college by growing garlic to sell at the newly established Davis Farmer’s Market. With college buddies he started Sky High Farm outside of Winters in 1983. They grew organic vegetables and started one of the first Community Supported Agricultural (CSA) programs in the area. In 1994, as it grew and included new partners the farm’s name was changed to Terra Firma Farm.

Paul loved to sing and his deep bass voice was part of many large and small singing groups in Davis and Winters. Paul was a voracious reader and loved attending music festivals, camping and hiking, and travel to Mexico.

He is survived by his wife Jean Witzman, his son Walker Holmes, sisters Claudia Holmes and Jo Ellyn King, sisters-in-law Joyce Jordan (James) and Kay Witzman, and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be planned for a later date. Gifts in his honor may be sent to the Center for Land-Based Learning, World Central Kitchen or the organization of your choice.
