A quick opinion: Houses, houses, everywhere

People looking to move to Winters have it easy compared to past years. When I wanted to move home it took using my local connections to find a place to rent while I was looking for house to buy. There were three houses on the market in the winter of 1977. The rental market is still the same with a zero vacancy rate. We made a good decision and bought the house that we still live in today. The other two homes, one on Grant Avenue and one on Taylor, I considered starter homes and thought that we would live there for a few years until a new subdivision came along. The other home was under construction, and was almost finished, but a little out of our price range.  We were told that American Savings and Loan would loan money to anyone breathing, so we made the deal that gave them 90 days to get the house completed and also gave us the time to save up the down payment. Last week we took a Sunday drive around Winters, stopping to walk through the model homes of Homes by Towne. I could see myself living in one of the model homes, but moving from my cul-de-sac doesn’t seem that appealing. Driving through the new neighborhood put a smile on my face. People moving in, working on their landscapes and starting a new life in Winters. By the time all of the homes are built we will have over 1,000 new neighbors to meet and get to know. I’ve met a few already and they seem happy to have found a new place to call home. There is a lot of talk about how fast Winters should grow, but there are only so many people that want to live in a small town, and fewer that can afford to live in Winters. We aren’t a cheap place to live, with our high cost of utilities and services, not to mention our above average housing costs. All together, there will be something like 650 new homes built along North Main Street, all the way to Moody Slough Road. Neimann and Anderson now connect with Main Street making it easier to drop off your kids at our local schools, or attend a sporting event. I’m not sure how long it will take to build all of the new homes, and sell them, but it will give us time to decide where we want to grow next. There are plenty of developers who have gone broke trying to build in Winters. It isn’t as easy as getting permission to build and then getting rich. The risk of developing new homes isn’t for the meek. Find the time to drive, or walk, through the new homes. It might be a surprise, but you’ll meet people just like the rest of us.
