Letters: A big hand to Youth Day volunteers

The 84th Winters Youth Day is in the books. The Youth Day Committee deserves a great big hand for a job superbly done. With a couple thousand visitors to Winters, this committee of volunteers pulled off a great family day. They must be mentioned, because hard work like this cannot go unnoticed.

The 2022 Youth Day Committee consists of Carol Stone, Bob Williams, Jenny Ramos, Jenny Callison, Anne Diaz and Kathy Cowan. Taylor Buley ran the Duck Derby. I stepped back in as Chairman of the Board and Parade Chairman. Thank you to all of our sponsors who donated to this year’s celebration. Without their support, Youth Day would be a fading memory.

I would like to thank some of the people who made the 84th Youth Day Parade a big success. My parade marshals are my saviors. Most of the volunteers have helped me with the parade for many, many years and I am truly grateful for the help. These great people are Lynne Secrist, Debra Hickerson Shaw, Bruce Guelden, Steve Caselli, Shep Harper, Rodney Orosco, Skyler Blakeslee and Diane Bosse.

This year we were required to staff all the barricades along the parade route. These wonderful people stepped up to help this year. They were Bill Davis, Richard and Ryan Buscher, Dylan Kitchen, Valerie Whitworth, Revalee Hemken, Gail and Mark and a few others that I didn’t catch their names, stepped up on Youth Day Morning. The great PG&E crew sent a handful of employees to serve as marshals as well. It’s a very hard job to coordinate all the entries and all these people made things run like a well-oiled machine.

Thank you goes out to you (Crystal) and the Winters Express for the fine coverage throughout the year; to Mariani Nut Company, John Singh and Baldo Arce for supplying our flatbeds; to everyone at Anytime Fitness for the use of their power for our reviewing stand, and to the fantastic Winters City crews for helping with everything from barricades to cleaning the horse trailer parking lot at Cody and Main.

A special thanks to Christian Duran and Sarah Madsen for singing the National Anthem at the reviewing stands. They both did a fantastic job. Also to our City Hall Announcer, Richard Kleeberg, another job well done.

Well, after the two-year absence another Youth Day is under our belts. We look forward to next year’s 85th Youth Day Celebration. We will be starting in the fall with the planning of next year’s celebration and we will be asking for help in running several events. Please consider helping and making sure Youth Day continues strong and proud.

Mike Sebastian,
2022 Youth Day Parade Chairman
