The Yolo County Library invites the community to the celebration and dedication of the newly renovated Shipley Walters Center for Yolo County Archives and Library Services on Friday, Sept. 27 from 10 a.m.-12 p.m., located at 226 Buckeye St. in Woodland. Attendees will listen to featured speakers, enjoy refreshments and tour the Yolo County Archives.

Yolo County has made it a practice to name buildings in honor of difference-makers who have contributed significantly to enhancing the quality of life in Yolo County. The Board of Supervisors unanimously approved in 2018 to name the renovated Yolo County Archives facility after Shipley Walters.

During the 1980s and 1990s, Walters worked tirelessly to save the county’s historic records and, in collaboration with former Yolo County Librarian Mary Stephens, established a permanent storage facility for the growing collection. In addition, Walters has dedicated more than 4,300 hours as an Archives volunteer, was a founding member of the Friends of the Yolo County Archives, and served on its Executive Board for many years. Walters has written extensively about Yolo County history and her published books, articles, notes, and other items are catalogued in the Archives’ Collection.

To help insure the long-term preservation of Yolo County’s history, the newly renovated archives facility includes: a custom built HVAC system that meets archival specifications for temperature and humidity, a reconfiguration and replacement of shelving to increase the storage capacity for the collection, new furniture in the Reading Room and staff workspaces, compliance with ADA requirements, and new improvements, including LED lighting, sprinkler systems, flooring and paint.

The Yolo County Library looks forward to honoring Shipley Walters and celebrating the facility renovation with the community.  Attendees are encouraged to RSVP online at: For more information about this event or the Archives and its services, email: or call: 530-666-8010.
