Jennifer Baumbach, Master Gardener Coordinator Saturday, Jan. 5 – Roses and shrubs: Winter care and pruning On Saturday, Jan. 5 from 10 to 11:30 a.m., join Master Gardeners of Yolo County at the Central Park Gardens, located at the corner of Third and B Streets, Davis. Participants will learn about basic care for roses and shrubs, including pruning techniques and how to control diseases and pests using the least toxic solutions possible. Saturday, Jan. 12 – Fruit tree pruning The Friends of Esparto Regional Library will present a free workshop on Fruit Tree Pruning from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Esparto Library located at 17065 Yolo Ave. Bonnie Berman will discuss fruit tree pruning, common fruit tree pests and how to control them and give tips on how to encourage fruiting and improve the health of fruit trees.                 Saturday, Jan. 19 will have 2 free workshops presented to the public. From 11 a.m. to noon in Central Park Gardens, located at the corner of Third & B Streets in Davis, UCCE Yolo County Master Gardeners will host a workshop on pruning fruit trees and shrubs. Participants will learn about pruning tools and how to use them to create healthy trees that will improve the strength and form of a tree and increase yield. From 10 to 11:30 a.m. at Woodland Community College, in Building 400, located at 2300 E. Gibson Rd. in Woodland, will host a workshop on grape pruning techniques. UCCE Yolo County Master Gardener Doug Mackenzie will present strategies for developing vines from recently purchased plants. Proper pruning of mature vines and the concepts of vine structure, crop control and pest management will be presented. Bring clippers or mini-loppers and stay after the workshop to practice pruning vines in the WCC demonstration garden. Sunday, Jan. 20– Gardening questions and answers On Sunday, Jan. 20, stop by the Mary L. Stephens Davis Library, children’s area conference room, for a free question and answer session from 2 to 4 p.m. with UCCE Master Gardeners of Yolo County.  Learn about planning winter projects, maintenance, what to plant now, irrigation and mulching. Saturday, Jan. 26 – Free flower arranging class On Saturday, Jan. 26 come make flower bouquets at the Davis United Methodist Church, at 10 a.m., located at 1620 Anderson Rd. UCCE Master Gardeners will provide tips on creating table arrangements, and all flowers will be provided. Participants must bring their own vase and clippers.  Sunday, Jan. 27 –  Year round kitchen gardening program A free monthly program is presented at the Mary L. Stephens Davis Library at 315 E. 14th Street, Davis, from 2 to 4 p.m.  UCCE Master Gardeners of Yolo County will discuss cleaning garden tools, planting bare root fruit trees and winter vegetables, harvesting citrus, winter greens and herbs, and you will learn about creating an edible winter garden.
