Voting is essential for a thriving democracy. So, too, is having objective information and analysis. The Express developed this voter’s guide to help take the guesswork out of this year’s ballot initiatives and candidates.

wintersexpress.com/vote2018. For our voter’s guide, we focused on candidates for state and national office that we believed were of significant interest and importance to our local community. For other candidates, we’ve provided a link to their official campaign statement at the Voter’s Guide portal on the Winters Express website. We relied on a Winters-specific sample ballot for information on measures and county candidates. Based on our research, we wrote our own analysis of the different propositions, measures and candidates with a focus on balance and objectivity. We used a number of non-partisan resources to research and gather information on the different propositions, measures, candidates and candidate positions, including PolitiFact California, BallotPedia and our not-for-profit media partner CALmatters. For some candidates, we relied on information contained on their campaign websites, social media accounts and in public records. You can find a full list of resources the Express relied upon for the creation of the voter’s guide by clicking here. On our digital platform, you can also watch short videos produced by CALmatters on the various propositions, read official campaign statements of some candidates and view an interactive map of local polling places open on Election Day. Special thanks to Yolo County Clerk-Assessor-Recorder Jesse Salinas and Program Manager Katharine Campos with the Yolo County Elections Office for providing the Express with their guidance and assistance, from inviting our staff into the Elections Office for conversations on election-related issues to answering late-night and weekend inquiries from Express reporters who wanted to ensure they got the details and the facts of certain election-related activities correct. We hope you find this voter’s guide useful. Click here to email us your thoughts, or mail a letter to: The Winters Express, 203 1st Street, Winters, California 95694.
