The Winters swim team traveled to Roseville for the 2019 Meet of Champions (MOC). The swim meet was held at the Roseville Swim Center and was the last meet of the summer swim program. Teams came from all over Northern California, ranging from Los Banos up to the Sierras and the Oregon border. Hundreds of swimmers and spectators comprised of friends and family enjoyed the days of competition on Saturday, Aug. 3 and Sunday, Aug. 4.
The swim team members battled for two days, which were cooler than last weekends’ triple digit temperatures at the Golden Valley League championship meet. Each day of the MOC started with preliminary trials to set qualifying times and then moved onto the final round in the afternoon. The MOC for the Winters athletes began with the 9-10 age group in the individual medley.
Trevor Grinbergs competed in the 11-12 age group. In the 100 yard individual medley Grinbergs’ time was 1:17.24. In the 50 yard freestyle his time was 30.03, while in the 50 yard backstroke he swam it in 37.48. In the 100 yard freestyle Grinbergs completed the event with a time of 1:09.37 and in the 50 yard breaststroke his time was 39.95.
Logan Anello competed in the 9-10 age group at the MOC. In the 25 yard freestyle Logan’s time was 21.25. In the 50 yard freestyle, which is the longest distance for his age group in a single stroke event, Logan had a time of 44.77.
Lyla Anello competed in 9-10 age group in the MOC event. In the 25 yard freestyle Lyla’s time was 20.72. The 25 yard backstroke was Lyla’s second event and she completed it in 27.02.
Mikaila Anello competed in the 11-12 age group. The 100 yard individual medley was Mikaila’s first event of the MOC. She completed it in 1:23.22. In the 50 yard freestyle Mikaila’s time was 32.91. In the next event Mikaila swam the 50 yard backstroke in 39.56. In the 50 yard breaststroke she completed the swim in 43.41. In the 100 yard freestyle, an endurance based event, Mikaila made the swim in 1:09.96. In her last event at the MOC, the 50 yard butterfly, she came in with a time of 41.02.
Tommy Duarte swam in the 13-14 age group at the MOC. The 50 yard freestyle was Duarte’s first event and he finished the distance in 30.91 seconds. In the 50 yard backstroke Duarte swam it in 42.86. While competing in the 50 yard breaststroke he had a time of 41.75. Duarte competed in the 50 yard butterfly and finished in 37.55.
Isabella Jurado competed in the 11-12 age group. Jurado swam the 100 yard individual medley in 1:31.72. Jurado then competed in the 50 yard freestyle swimming it in 35.69, also competing in the longer 100 yard freestyle she finished the distance in 1:17.46. Jurado swam the 50 yard backstroke completing it in 44.38 and the 50 yard breaststroke, where she finished with a time of 48.71.
Kenleigh Kratzer competed in the 11-12 age group. In the 50 yard freestyle Kratzer had a time of 32.15 seconds. Kratzer added 50 yards to the last event in the 100 yard freestyle, completing the swim in 1:12.05. Competing in the 50 yard backstroke Kratzer swam it in 40.88, while in the 50 yard butterfly she recorded one of her best times for the MOC at 37.74.
Bella Laukkanen was the fourth athlete to compete in the 11-12 age group at the MOC. Laukkanen started off with the 100 yard individual medley, finishing with a time of 1:27.78. In the solo stroke events Laukkanen swam the 50 yard freestyle in 33.57 and in the 100 yard freestyle completed the longer distance in 1:11.77. In the 50 yard backstroke Laukkanen made it in 44.71 seconds and in the 50 yard breaststroke made it in 48.15. Laukkanen’s last event was the 50 yard butterfly which she finished with a time of 38.02.
Garrett Matheson, the oldest from Winters to compete at the MOC, competed in the 15-18 age group. One of Garrett’s stronger events is the 100 yard individual medley, an event he completed in 1:08.96. Garrett also swam in the freestyle events. In the 50 yard freestyle he made it in 25.47 and he finished the 100 yard freestyle in 58.53.
Kenneth Matheson competed in the 13-14 age group at the MOC. In the 50 yard freestyle Kenneth finished the swim in 29.56 seconds. Kenneth swam his last event, the 50 yard breaststroke on Sunday. His time was 38.81. Traveling to the MOC for one event was not an issue for Kenneth, as he is always ready to cheer on his team mates.
Mikaila Anello, Jurado, Kratzer and Laukkanen also competed in the 11-12 200 yard medley relay. The team of four did not qualify in the preliminary round to move on to the finals. All times above are from the preliminary round. The athletes from Winters did not place high enough to qualify for the finals.]]>
