Winters swim team takes top place, again

On Wednesday, Sept. 8 the Winters High School swim team competed at Orland for the Butte View League meet. They competed against swimmers from Gridley High School, Orland High School, Durham High School, Las Plumas High School, Willows High School, Paradise High School and Oroville High School.

Warriors continued to place in top spots in multiple events. Both the men’s and women’s teams ranked first again. The women’s team obtained 127 points followed by Orland with 106 points and Durham with 90 points. The men’s team obtained 109 points followed by Gridley with 68 points and Willows with 63 points.

Both of the WHS 200-yard medley relay teams took first place in their events. The women’s team of Mikaila Anello, Amelia Doran, Madeline MacMahon and Mickayla Passantino finished with a final time of 2:02.73. The men’s team of Trevor Grinbergs, Kenneth Matheson, Diego Valencia and Finnegan Yarnes finished with a final time of 2:02.26.

In the women’s 200-yard freestyle event Kalyssa Grinbergs finished first with a final time of 2:27.29. John Rominger finished first in the men’s 200-yard freestyle with a final time of 2:24.58.

Ava Skinner placed second in the women’s 200-yard individual medley with a final time of 3:12.02. In the men’s 200-yard individual medley Trevor placed first with a final time of 2:32.40, and Kenneth Matheson finished fourth in 3:09.33.

Warriors scored points for the team in both the women’s and men’s 50-yard freestyle events. Valencia placed first with a time of 24.75 and Yarnes placed seventh with a time of 28.94. MacMahon placed first with a time of 26.60.

Valencia also placed first in the men’s 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:02.96, followed closely behind by Trevor who placed second in 1:14.73.

MacMahon took first again in the women’s 100-yard freestyle with a time of 56.49. In the men’s event, Rominger earned points placing fourth with a time of 1:03.85. Tommy Duarte also earned points for the Warriors placing sixth with a time of 1:05.17.

Kalyssa placed first in the women’s 500-yard freestyle with a time of 6:45.55.

In the women’s 200-yard freestyle relay, Winters swimmers Makayla Garland, Mahalia Lanfranco, Skinner and Kalyssa placed second with a final time of 2:17.22.

In the 100-yard backstroke events, Passantino placed first for the women’s team with a time of 1:04.41. Duarte placed third for the men’s team with a time of 1:25.11.

In the women’s 100-yard breaststroke event, Doran placed first with a time of 1:14.38 and Lanfranco placed sixth with a time of 1:36.12.

In the men’s 100-yard breaststroke event, Matheson earned points placing third with a time of 1:22.36 and Yarnes placed sixth with a time of 1:24.09.

Both Winters teams took first place in the 400-yard freestyle relay events. Women’s team swimmers Passantino, Anello, Doran and MacMahon finished with a time of 4:10.05. The men’s team swimmers Yarnes, Rominger, Trevor and Valencia finished with a time of 4:10.30.

The swim team is competing in BVL meets in Oroville on Sept. 15 and at home on Oct. 6.
