The Winters High School soccer teams kicked off their season the end of the March.

The soccer season is playing under the same athletic guidelines as the football team, with  spectators limited to two parents or guardians per an athlete.

Women’s Soccer The WHS women’s soccer team took on Colusa in a home game on March 23.

“Playing in 25 mph winds, the Warriors took the field for the first time in over a year. All players who were physically able to play saw time on the green,” said coach Kim Olivas.

Freshman Samantha Ramirez led scoring for the Warriors with two goals (her first for her WHS soccer career) and one assist. Sophomore Yarethzy Sanchez also made two goals and had one assist.

Junior Jewelee’ah Garcia scored her first high school goal, sinking a penalty kick into the high left corner. Seniors Mallory Layne and Itzel Rodriguez scored one goal each.

Strong assists came from the underclassmen with sophomore Pricilia Gonzalez and freshman Alondra Molina, each with one assist.

The defense was solidly anchored by league defensive MVP goalkeeper senior Fatima Guzman.

Both goalkeepers Guzman and Marta Silva saw equal playing time both having saves and are credited with a shutout with the final score Warriors 7 to Colusa’s 0.

The Warriors travelled to Live Oak on March 25 to facing not only last year’s league winner, but also last year’s two leading scorers in the league.

Olivas said the Warriors were up to the challenge and started out strong with a goal by Sanchez assisted by Lilianna Rodriguez. Lilianna took advantage of their momentum and scored a free kick from outside the penalty box.

Live Oak came back to score a goal off of a corner kick to tie up the game.

Olivas said there was a questionable penalty called inside the penalty box against the Warriors and Live Oak was able to put it in the net.

Men’s Soccer On March 23 the WHS men’s soccer team played against Colusa, winning the match 1-0. Grayson Roberts made the goal with an assist from Jacob Baker.

The Warriors took on Live Oak on March 25, winning, again, 1-0. Roberts made the winning goal again with an assist by Christian Hernandez.

Coach Fernando Cervantes said the Warriors offense was strong enough to maintain the narrow lead in both games.

“On the defensive end the ball was taken away too quickly, and they struggled to get it back,” Cervantes said. “We have some techniques and strategies to work on before next game.”
