Swim team dives in for BVL season opener at Sutter

The Winters High School Athletics program is starting to get into full swing as more teams step into competition. The swim team participated in their first meet at the beginning of the month. The Winters Swim Team dove in the Sutter Union High School’s pool for the Butte View League season opener on Sept. 1. They competed against swimmers from Sutter, Orland High School, Durham High School, Willows High School, Gridley, Oroville High School, East Nicolaus High School, Las Plumas High School and Paradise High School. Both the men’s and women’s teams ranked first with 97 points each against the other schools. The women’s team was followed by Orland with 68.5 points and Durham with 54 points. The men’s team was followed by Gridley with 68 points and Sutter with 36. Winters swimmers took top placements in a majority of the events. In the 200-yard medley relay the men’s team featuring Tommy Duarte, Trevor Grinbergs, John Rominger and Kenneth Matheson took first with a final time of 2:09.67 and 11 points. The women’s team featuring Mahalia Lanfranco, Amelia Doran, Mickayla Passantino and Brianna Baugh took second with a final time of 2:17.13 and 4 points. In the 200-yard freestyle event, freshman Mikaila Anello placed second with a final time of 2:17.88 and 7 points. In the men’s event, freshman Finnegan Yarnes placed first with a final time of 2:37.15 and 9 points. Warriors placed first in 200-yard individual medley events. Sophomore Doran’s final time was 2:26.65 and freshman Trevor’s final time was 2:30.20. They both earned 9 points for Winters. Three Winters swimmers placed in the top 5 ranks for the 50-yard freestyle events. On the women’s team, junior Madeline MacMahon placed first with a final time of 25.51 and freshman Lanfranco placed fifth with a final time of 32.97. For the men’s team, junior Rominger placed fourth with a final time of 27.47. Two Warriors placed in the top three ranks for the women’s 100-yard butterfly. MacMahon placed first with a final time of 1:01.93 and junior Passantino placed third with a final time of 1:04.91. Three Warriors placed in the top five ranks for the men’s 100-yard freestyle. Senior Diego Valencia placed first with a final time of 54.53. Rominger was right behind in second with a final time of 1:03.65, and Yarnes placed fourth with a final time of 1:09.71. In the women’s 500-yard freestyle, two Winters swimmers took the top two ranks. Doran placed first with a final time of 6:03.35 and junior Kalyssa Grinbergs swam into second with a final time of 6:52.94. Winters relay teams made top three ranks for both 200-yard freestyle relay events. The men’s team placed first with a final time of 1:50.83, featuring swimmers Matheson, Yarnes, Rominger and Valencia. The women’s team placed third with a final time of 2:20.31, featuring swimmers Lanfranco, freshman Brianna Baugh, MacMahon and Passantino. In the women’s 100-yard backstroke, Passantino placed first with a final time of 1:03.50, and Anello placed third with a final time of 1:17.11. In the men’s event, Valencia placed third with a final time of 1:07.79, and Trevor placed fourth with a final time of 1:10.34. Sophomore Duarte also brought in points as he placed sixth with a final time of 1:28.08. In the men’s 100-yard breaststroke, Matheson placed third with a final time of 1:23.60. The Warrior 400-yard freestyle relay team took first in the event. Swimmers Doran, Anello, MacMahon and Kalyssa swam it in a final time of 4:14.53 and scored 11 points for Winters. The swim team is competing in BVL meets in Orland on Sept. 8 and in Oroville on Sept. 15. They will be competing at home on Oct. 6.
