Warrior leaders making an impact on campus

Being a “Warrior” is more than being an athlete. Clubs on campus give students an opportunity to do something bigger and bring something to campus to enrich their classmates’ lives and as leaders on campus. Living in a small town also gives students a chance to represent the “Warrior” title in the community. Some of the Winters High School club advisors recognized some of the seniors who have made an impact and served as emerging leaders this year. Courtney Casavecchia, ASB advisor, acknowledged the roles seniors Gracie Barnett, Karina Del Toro and Octavio Diaz played this year. All three students were in ASB for all four years of their high school career. Casavecchia said these students have exemplified what it means to be called leaders by heading committees, building community in class, reaching out to students on campus, and working hard to make sure WHS was a place students felt comfortable and welcome. “They put in countless hours before and after school decorating hallways, setting up for rallies, attending meetings, making posters, working on the Warrior WakeUp, and planning and working events,” said Casavecchia. “They are kind, passionate, and all-around amazing Seniors and I’m so proud of them. I am truly honored to be their teacher.” Kayla Roberts, Winters FFA advisor, recognized Anthony Carrillo for his efforts this year. “Anthony is an outstanding, charismatic leader who will do amazing things in his life,” Roberts said. “He works very hard to promote a positive school climate and makes sure he involved all students in the happenings of campus.” Kate Humphrey, Warriors for Change advisor, recognized Faviola Guzman for her get-it-done attitude and clear sense of selfhood. Fabi is a strong addition to this club and is unafraid to speak up for fairness and kindness, especially on behalf of those who cannot advocate for themselves,” said Humphrey. Humprey acknowledged Mallory Layne, noting she is an articulate and thoughtful club member. “She (Layne) is always willing to participate and lends her thoughtful perspective to every conversation,” said Humphrey. Rebecca Bjorkman, Interact Club advisor, also recognized Layne in her role of leading the Interact Club as President. “She has led our club through weekly virtual meetings, several community service projects, and a seamless transition to meeting in person,” Bjorkman said. “Mallory has strong leadership and organizational skills and has used these skills to grow and strengthen our club’s community.” Bjorkman took time to acknowledge Cinthia Garnica who served as the Interact Club Vice President. “She (Garnica) has collaborated well and invited input from all club members as we worked to create and implement service events. Her skills in engaging all members of the club during meetings have been essential to our club’s community atmosphere,” said Bjorkman. Katelyn Guy, WHS Feminist Club advisor, said Valeria Ceja stepped up as the club president this year and was instrumental in planning fundraisers and club events. “Not only does she succeed academically but she also shines as a leader, encouraging her peers to reach their full potential as girls, students, and community members,” Guy said. Being a Warrior isn’t limited to athletics or club participation. The Warrior Way is also stepping up to make an impact on the campus culture. These students are creating leadership opportunities both within school and in the community. Mike Williams, WHS music educator, said Katie Pelletier has been a positive force within the performing arts department her entire time at WHS. “She has frequently stepped up to be a vocal soloist during numerous choir concerts and her positive attitude and dedication to her craft is an inspiration,” Williams said. “Additionally, her advocacy of the importance of music to incoming 9th graders has been crucial to the continuity of the program.” Kim Spalding, WHS educator, recognized Amaya Jimenez as a leader to keep an eye on. Spalding said that Jimenez has been coming into the Life Skills classroom to help her students with their academic and social skills, as well as participating last year in a fundraiser to help raise money for Life Skills class field trips. “My students light up when they see her and she is very helpful with assisting them with their work in my classroom. She is very caring and patient with my students,” Spalding said. “She is considering becoming a special education teacher and I believe that she will make a huge difference in her future students’ lives.”
