The faculty and staff at Winters Elementary School are excited to welcome students and families to the 2017-18 school year.

The Waggoner and Rominger main offices will reopen on Tuesday, Aug. 1, at 8 a.m. to register any new families wishing to enroll. Until then, enrollment packets are available at the school district office, located at 909 West Grant Avenue.

The first day of school will be Wednesday, Aug. 9, and many Start-of-School activities are planned:

~  Thursday, Aug. 3, WES is sponsoring its annual Paper Parade. From 3-7 p.m. in the Rominger cafeteria, families are asked to drop off Emergency Cards and other Start-of-School forms in order to find out their child’s teacher. District representatives from the food service and transportation departments will be on hand to answer any questions. In addition, parent groups will have information available about membership. If families cannot make the Paper Parade, they are welcome to come by the main office at Waggoner or Rominger before Aug. 9.

~  Saturday, Aug. 5, is the PTA’s annual Family Clean-up Day. All families and community members are invited to join the PTA and the Winters High School football team as they wash cubbies, dust off playground toys, and shovel bark from 8–11 a.m. The group will start at Waggoner and then head to Rominger. Participants are encouraged to bring garden tools and work gloves.

~  Monday, Aug. 7, kindergarten families are invited to “Meet Your Teacher” from 2–3 p.m. and enjoy the PTA’s annual Kindergarten Ice-Cream Social.

~  Tuesday, Aug. 8, 1st through 3rd grade families can “Meet Your Teacher” from 1–2 p.m.; 4th and 5th grade families can “Meet Your Teacher” from 2–3 p.m.

~  School starts on Wednesday, Aug. 9, at 8:15 a.m. for kindergarten students, 8:20 a.m. for 4th and 5th graders, and at 8:30 a.m. for 1st–3rd grade students.

After the school day begins, all families are invited to join the PTA in the Waggoner library for the PTA’s annual “Tears or Cheers” coffee celebration.

Dismissal times for the first week of school are as follows:

~  Kindergarten students will be dismissed at 12:15 p.m. each day.

~  1st–5th graders will be dismissed at 1:05 p.m. on Wednesday and at regular times on Thursday and Friday: 2:35 p.m. at Waggoner and 2:50 p.m. at Rominger.

As parking can be congested the first few days of school, families are encouraged to park a few blocks away and walk safely to school using sidewalks and crosswalks. When dropping-off or picking up students, the school asks that drivers are courteous and not block the driveways of nearby houses; also, please drive slowly and safely.

At the end of the first week of school, the PTA invites all families to cool down and relax at the Bobbie Greenwood Community Pool from 6–8 p.m. for Family Swim Night. Thanks to the City of Winters, admission is free.
